Gaia-X Ecosystems

Home » Community » Ecosystems

Gaia-X Ecosystems are a gateway to learning about Gaia-X and to communities of businesses and organisations aiming to develop data-driven solutions and interoperable data spaces.

Our Ecosystems bring together diverse stakeholders—ranging from businesses, industries, and researchers to public sector entities—into communities tailored to specific sectors, such as Health or Agriculture, as well as horizonal domains, such as Location and Smart Cities.

Gaia-X Ecosystems go beyond networking—they support knowledge exchange on cutting-edge projects, share funding opportunities and form consortia, and collect cross-country use cases. By bringing together Gaia-X members and non-members, the Ecosystems promote open dialogue on common standards, best practices, and technical deliverables that address the trusted data sharing needs of each sector.

Ecosystems are independently organised by a (co-)lead supported by the Gaia-X Association. Their activities include regular online meetings, producing white papers, and organising webinars. Read more about the goals and activities of each Ecosystem below.

Ecosystems are open for participation to members and non-members of Gaia-X. Member organisations of Gaia-X can find dedicated Ecosystem spaces on the Gaia-X Members Platform.

Are you working on a data space initiative and looking to connect with European stakeholders? Or simply looking to learn more about Gaia-X? Then contact Gaia-X Community Manager, Victor de Vries to get onboarded to the Ecosystems.

AEROSPACE

A global community for the Aerospace sector aiming to securely exchange, collaborate, and leverage operational data along the supply chain.

Co-leads: Frédéric Sutter and Alain Escaffre-Faure, Airbus

AGRICULTURE

A community for getting informed and exchanging about the latest developments on and funding for agriculture and agrifood data spaces projects. Meetings are every three weeks.

Co-leads: Jurgen Vangeyte, Flanders Insitute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO) and Stefan Stiene, Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)

CONSTRUCTION

This Ecosystem is currently under development.

EDUCATION

The Education Ecosystem aims to bring all the necessary public and private stakeholders together to ensure data circulation in education & skills and interoperable technology across Europe, through open standards and open technologies.

Co-leads: Claudio Cimelli, French Ministry for Education and Matthias de Bièvre, VisionsPol

ENERGY

A community working towards a European Energy Data Space. The ambition is to provide an ecosystem for the development of use cases at the European scale, to foster the energy transition and reach carbon neutrality. Thus, sharing data in a trusted, secured and sovereign way, reaching a significant size and becoming a reference in the industry.

Lead: Martine Gouriet, Électricité de France

FINANCE

The Gaia X Finance ecosystem gathers all interested parties in promoting value-creating use cases building on data sharing and Gaia X values and standards in the Finance industry.

Co-leads: Aude Gauthier-Moreau, BNPParibas, Patrick Laurens-Frings, Caisse des dépôts, and Claire Kuetemeier, Ministry of Economics – Hessen

HEALTH

Lead: Bert Verdonck, Luxembourg National Data Service (LNDS)

LOCATION

The Location Ecosystem is the “two-way bridge” between (i) the geospatial and space Communities and (ii) the various Data Spaces, which require information based on location data i.e. X, Y, Z, through:

  • Understanding needs and requirements from the various Data Spaces related to the use of location data
  • Supporting geoinformation and space stakeholders contributing to the various Data Spaces
  • Making sure Connector / Agent bringing interoperability across Data Spaces are using location (de-facto) standards being developed in the past 30 years and used extensively

Co-leads: Christian Linder, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR), Emmanuel Mondon, AdviceGEO, and Anti Jakobsson, National Land Survey of Finland

LOGISTICS

The Gaia-X Logistics Ecosystem facilitates secure, transparent, and interoperable data sharing among companies and within companies (horizontally and vertically), enabling efficient collaboration and innovation while respecting data sovereignty and privacy regulations. It provides use cases of exchanging and utilising data resources in a trusted environment, fostering cross-sector partnerships in supply chains, and accelerating digital transformation towards a digital supply chain continuum.

Co-leads: Michael Henke and Lucas Schreiber, Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics

MANUFACTURING

A community for aligning data space initiatives globally in the manufacturing industry as well as cross-sectoral supply chain. The objective will be to join forces in Europe to develop an Industry 4.0 dataspace for the manufacturing industry.

Lead: John Blankendael, Brainport Industries

MEDIA

An Ecosystem of many players from the whole industry, including producers, broadcasters, publishers, news agencies, audiovisual national archives, innovation labs, standardisation bodies. The Media Ecosystem aims to:

  • Raise awareness on GAIA-X and inform on Data Space latest news and publications
  • Discuss, identify, and develop use cases in Media (and collaboration with other industries)
  • Drive participation to the Trusted Media Data Space (TEMS)

Lead: Lucille Verbaere, European Broadcasters Union (EBU)

MOBILITY

The purpose of this Ecosystem is to share experiences about dataspace implementation in the Mobility and Transport domain, and leverage on existing achievements or best practices identified in Gaia-X Hubs or in other Ecosystems.

Co-leads: Dominique Epardeau, Eona-X and Steffen Turnbull, German Aerospace Center (DLR)

PUBLIC SECTOR

Establishing a network of public sector representatives in order to promote the idea of Gaia-X and data sharing within the public sector in Europe.

Lead: Tina Siegfried, Dataport

SMART CITIES

The Gaia-X Smart Cities Ecosystem supports the creation and development of data spaces and projects in the domain of smart cities and communities. The focus of the Ecosystem group is on fostering public-private collaboration among the different ecosystem partners who are active within the spatial area of a city or community, from a cross-domain perspective. The Ecosystem fosters collaboration by inviting speakers to talk about innovative use cases, by providing insights in relevant funding opportunities and by stimulating ecosystem interactions.

Co-leads: Lukas Hohl, BeyondCivic and Laura De Cock, Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (IMEC)

SMART LIVING

Smart Living Services are considered essential for various virtual assistants and the optimization of energy efficiency. As buildings are always part of larger structures and networks, Smart Homes, Smart Buildings, or groups of them should be capable to interact with smart energy grids, smart city structures, smart mobility solutions, or smart assistance services. The domain’s vision is to enable these cross-sectoral applications or services and to establish concepts, examples, and implementations for Smart Living data spaces based on Gaia-X.

Lead: Hilko Hoffman, Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)

TOURISM

sharing to boost a more competitive, resilient and sustainable European tourism industry. The Tourism Ecosystem also contributes to the deployment of the European Tourism Data Space to ensure Gaia-X compliance.

Lead: Dolores Ordonez, Anysolution and Jorge Nuñez, adQuiver
