The Gaia-X Governmental Advisory Board is a consultative group composed of representatives from various European governments and the European Commission. It meets twice a year, with the main purpose to advise the Board of Directors of the Gaia-X AISBL. Importantly, the Advisory Board’s role is strictly advisory; it does not carry legal responsibility for the Association’s actions or decisions, nor does it hold any power of legal representation. Â
Rationale for CreationÂ
The Advisory Board was established to improve coordination and create synergies among government officials from European countries that already have Gaia-X hubs. Its objective is to speed up the development of shared, secure, and portable dataspaces that are interoperable both within Europe and across borders.Â
Main ObjectivesÂ
- Advise and support the Gaia-X Board of Directors and Gaia-X Management Team on public policy matters, particularly where the Association’s non-profit activities interact with national, international, or European laws and policies. The Board ensures alignment between the Association’s mission and the directives of individual countries, as well as Gaia-X’s overall strategy.Â
- Help develop Gaia-X National Hubs and ensure their contributions are consistent with the creation of a federated, open, trusted and sovereign data and infrastructure ecosystems, as pursued by Gaia-X AISBL.Â
- Facilitate the flow of information between the Hubs and Gaia-X AISBL, supporting market adoption and the emergence of Gaia-X-labelled data ecosystems.Â

The Chairman of the Governmental Advisory Board coordinates the Board’s activities, leads discussions and decision-making, and guides the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities both during and outside of meetings.Â
The Board is currently in the process of electing a new Chairman. The last to hold this position was Jack Hamande, Director-General for Simplification & Digital Transformation at the Belgian Federal Public Service Policy and Support (BOSA). Before Jack Hammande, the position was held by Alberto Palomo, in his role as Chief Data Officer of the Government of Spain (he served as Chairman for two years).Â
